Hillcrest Middle Achieves
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP)!!

AYP, or Adequate Yearly Progress, is a goal established by the No Child Left Behind act that rates schools and school districts on their progress toward the mandate to have all students proficient in math and English by 2014. We were advised that based on PASS testing Hillcrest was one of only two middle schools in either Sumter school district to make AYP for the previous reporting period! Congratulations and thanks for all the hard work to our faculty, administrators, students and parents. Keep up the good work Wildcats!

Our 2010 HMS Teacher of the Year is........
Ms. Vernesia Cotton!  Ms. Cotton is one of out CATE (Career and Technology Education) teachers and she teaches 6th, 7th, & 8th graders.  She received a well-deserved standing ovation from our students at the last awards program of the year in June when she was announced as the TOY!

Review of Our Cell Phone Policy
Cell phones are not permitted on any campus in Sumter School District Two. Not only are cell phones a potential distraction to the classroom learning environment, but the technology available on many cell phones makes it possible for students to photograph and send copies of tests to other students, text message answers to test questions and otherwise compromise the integrity of student learning. Also, for safety reasons, while students are riding buses in Sumter District Two the cell phone policy is in effect just as if the student was in a classroom during the school day. There is no reason that a student should need to use a cell phone during the regular school day. Our school will immediately assist the student in any situation requiring communication with a parent or other responsible adult by using a school telephone. School personnel will confiscate any cell phone and immediately turn it in to an administrator to be kept in a locked, secure place. The first violation will result in a discipline referral and the phone will be returned to the parent or guardian pending a parent conference. It will be verbally told to the parent that any cell phone taken a second time will be confiscated and returned one year from the date of confiscation. If a student refuses to surrender his/her cell phone the consequence will be a three point discipline violation and a 5-7 day out-of-school suspension.

We know many of you have expressed concern about the H1N1 flu, also known as the swine flu. Follow the link to the parent letter issued by DHEC. This letter may answer some of your questions and provides tips to prevent the flu.

From the Principal

Dear Wildcat Parents and Students,

It is hard to believe that the 2009 - 2010 year has ended! We are already planning for the 2010 - 2011 year and great things are ahead for our Wildcats!

Our students will be wearing uniforms for the second year.  The basic uniform has not changed- khaki shorts, pants, or skirts & navy blue or white shirts with collars.  One small change this year is that jackets worn inside the building and in classrooms may be navy, white, or black.  We will also have the Hillcrest hooded jackets for sale in the main office.

Hillcrest Middle will be closed for the summer shutdown from July 5th - July 16th. We will be open Monday - Thursday from July 19th - August 5th and return to a Monday - Friday schedule on August 9th. As always, the doors to Hillcrest are always open for our students, their parents, and our community. We look forward to your continued support as we get ready for the 2010 - 2011 year.

Have a safe & happy summer. Don't forget to read several good books during your summer break!

Sincerely,
Robert Barth
